Come watch us play!
The league runs from April-August each year, and we love having folks come out to cheer us on while we play. Bring your kids, your cousin, your grumpy dad, grab a coffee, grab a cake, grab a whole bag of frozen peas!
Then come see us at the Rec :D
What to expect at a game?
On game days, we love having folks down to support the game.
Here’s what to expect if you come join us:
10am: Players arrive to set-up the field, warm up those muscles, and have a snack before the game begins.
11am: First pitch! We aim to have all our league games start at 11am on the dot. Sometimes, we start with what is called a ‘ceremonial first pitch’, where someone who isn’t a Sunflower (that could be you!) gets to have a shot at making the first pitch of the game. We will never make anyone do this, but if you’re coming along and you’d like to, let one of us know and we’ll be sure to make it happen.
11am-2pm: Game! We play four innings total in league games, and take a long break halfway through (between inning two and three). Games don’t always run until 2pm -- in fact, they are often over by 1pm, but sometimes run on.
If you decide to come down and watch, you don’t have to stay for the whole game! Come late, leave early, and have a good time.
But wait, what’s an inning? Why are there four of them? Help!
Great question! Innings are how baseball games are divided, like halves in football or quarters in basketball. During each inning, both teams have the chance to bat (offence) and field (defence).
Let’s look at an example
Let’s say you come along to a Wreckers vs Gators game. Before the game, the captains will meet with the umpire to decide who is the ‘home’ and ‘visiting’ team for the game. This can be done based on coin flip, team preference, or some other method. The visiting team always bat first.
The captains decide the Wreckers will be the home team for this game, and the Gators will bat first. So, at the start of the inning, the Wreckers would take to the field to defend against the Gators, who are batting. This is called the top of the inning.
The top of the inning ends when three outs are made by the Wreckers against the Gators -- that is, they get three of the Gator’s batters out, whether from strik-outs, catching their fly balls, tagging them, etc. -- OR, the Gators successfully make five runs, scoring five points. This cap on runs is a league rule, and isn’t used in professional baseball.
The teams will then switch who is batting and who is fielding. This is now the bottom of the inning. Once again, play commences and when three batters are out, or five runs made, the bottom of the inning is over. At this point, we’ve made it through a full inning! Yay!
In the Queen’s Park League, we play four innings per game. In professional baseball, such as the MLB, they play nine innings per game!
